Halyards are not only used to hoist the sails, they are also used to put tension on the luff of the sail, luff tension is used to optimise performance.

Big breaking strengths and ultra low stretch are required here. Low stretch becomes particularly important because of how long a halyard is, this extra length compared to other lines means that the stretch component here is amplified. Halyards are probably one of the hardest lines to give a definitive answer as to what is the best fiber to use. Often the decision will come down to what components and fitting you already have in place on your boat, or what you are comfortable with. Often the type of winch, or your running gear will dictate what fiber you can or cannot use.

For racing yachts, super low stretch/creep vectran is the best choice for halyards. Budget racing yachts may consider a wire rope/polyester combination if cost is an issue. Wire is probably the best option for budget cruisers too because the workhorse of sailing rope; double braid polyester is often considered too stretchy for halyards. Having said that, polyester double braid is often still used. Even spectra has a bit too much stretch and creep to achieve optimum levels of performance for luxury cruisers. I also would not recommend wire rope for luxury cruisers as it can bang against the mast creating unnecessary noise.
