Running backstay tails must first have a section of rope at the end that can cope with the friction and heat of your winch, and second be able to run through a block. Once these two criteria have been met, stretch is the next most important factor. You should choose a rope that has as little stretch as possible taking into account the level of performance you want to achieve and your budget. For a cruising yacht, usability might be more important than getting that extra 5% performance. It just depends on your particular setup and preference.
